Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games in 2013. It is the first major entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise since 2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV. The single-player story takes place in the fictional state of San Andreas, Southern California, and follows three criminals in their attempt to carry out robberies under pressure from a government agency and powerful criminals. The open world design allows players to roam freely through the open lands of San Andreas and the fictional city of Los Santos in Los Angeles.

The game is played from a third or first person perspective and your world is controlled on foot or by vehicle. Players control the three main actors in single-player mode and switch between them both during and outside missions. The story focuses on heist sequences, and many missions include shooting and racing games. A “wanted” system regulates the aggression of the police response to gamblers who commit crimes. Grand Theft Auto Online, the game’s online multiplayer mode, allows up to 30 players to participate in a variety of cooperative and competitive game modes.

Development of the game began shortly after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV and was shared by many Rockstar studios around the world. The development team took inspiration from many of their previous projects, such as Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3, and designed the game around three main players to improve the core structure of its predecessors. Much of the development work involved creating the open world, and several team members conducted field surveys in California to take photos for the design team. The game’s soundtrack features an original score composed by a team of producers who have been working together for several years. It was released in September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, November 2014 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and April 2015 for Microsoft Windows.
