You wanted easier and safer. Just when you thought you wouldn’t see another version of Internet Explorer on this side of the next Ice Age, Microsoft created an entirely new version of its powerful browsing application.

It has been around for so long that many network users are tired of waiting for Microsoft to update their technology and have searched elsewhere, mainly for Firefox.

Now the big bad king of the browser world isn’t in the mood to see his crowned crown, but can he do enough to get the deserters back?

For starters, the new simplified interface is definitely an improvement.

In fact, Microsoft removed the menu bar and hid all the tools and features in a series of compact icons placed right in the upper right corner of the interface.

This allows you to browse pages in a very large viewing space. IE has finally decided to support tabbed browsing as well. It includes a button to instantly open a new tab, plus an ingenious quick tabs button that opens thumbnails of all open tabs on a single screen, and unlike Firefox, IE 7 actually has a button to close each tab.

You can even save groups of tabs as your homepage so that they all start at startup. We also liked the preview tool, which adapts the page to your document 7 and improves the way it integrates RSS. Each time you come across a site that supports RSS, the toolbar icon changes to its characteristic orange color.

Click on it and you will be taken to a page with all the feeds for this website. Just click the subscription for this show to add it to your favorites.

You can also subscribe by clicking on the small star icon on the left. However, unlike Firefox, there is no drop-down list for each item in a feed.

The Favorites Center, accessible by clicking on the large star icon, is splitof favorites, shows and history.

Security is usually one of the main weaknesses of IE.

In addition to a blocking window, version 7 also offers an anti-phishing filter. To try, we opened famous phishing sites published on Phishtank. To our disappointment, the filter was unable to detect most of them. Phishing protection may not apply in IE 7, but the browser includes at least SSL 2 security protocols.

Despite all its improvements, IE is still far from perfect. Like Firefox, IE does not pass the Acid2 test and does not even support the latest standards.

We’ve found that IE lags behind and drags on when it opens new tabs, the Tools tab, and applies new settings. You can add a wide variety of search bar providers and add-ons from the Microsoft website, but they are still available in a much smaller number than Mozilla’s Firefox extensions.
